Officer Hopps is Triggered

Opinion

I have a confession.  I’m triggered.  There I said it.  It is out in the open.

By what you may ask?  Well most recently it was a Glock 17 and a Colt M4 Carbine.  But before that it was my Browning Hell’s Canyon X-Bolt .270.  When I go to the range on my personal time I am also triggered by my Glock 26 and 43.

The definition of triggered – to initiate or precipitate (a chain of events, scientific reaction, psychological process, etc.).

The pulling of those triggers initiated a profound appreciation for the Second Amendment and how grateful I am for it.  Our forefathers protected my right to defend my life and the lives of others with firearms.

I have heard several statements regarding alleged limitations on the Second Amendment like ‘it was not written with assault rifles in mind because they did not exist back then.’  Ok, well by that argument the First Amendment was not written to protect keyboard warriors on Facebook, Twitter, or any other platform on the inter-webs which did not exist at the time of its inception.  But no need to worry Nancy, you can still whine and complain against the government from behind the safety of your keyboard without fear of being flogged or stoned in the street.  You might give that a try in Venezuela and see how it pans out for you.

Without the protection of 2A, the church shooting in Texas would have been far more deadly.  And thankfully the Texas government passed a bill which allows licensed gun owners to legally carry their weapons in places of worship.  Brilliant.  If you want to stop church shootings, look no further than your own trained and capable parishioners.

Ironically this particular piece of legislation nullifies a provision in Texas law which previously restricted the possession of handguns in places of worship.  Clearly Texas politicians recognized the legal restriction of firearms in churches did not stop a gunman from killing 26 people at a Texas church in 2017.  Rather than continue to restrict church attendees from being able to defend themselves, the bill was written to prevent a repeat of the past.

Sadly, two people were killed and lost their lives in another Texas church.  But, thanks to the new legislation, the loss of life was limited to two.  Without the bill, countless more lives would have been lost.

One could argue, there should not have been a piece of legislation limiting the possession of firearms amongst churchgoers in the first place.  I agree wholeheartedly.  Since that was not the case in Texas, I am very pleased to see a state doing what all states should be doing.

Time and time again criminals and those who want to do evil show they have no respect for the law.  There could be a thousand gun laws limiting a criminal’s ability to buy, own, obtain, or otherwise possess a firearm.  I guarantee you they will not follow a single one of them.

Many gun control laws are ineffective because criminals do not by nature, follow the laws.  Gun control laws more often than not, limit the law abiding citizen from the ability to exercise their 2A rights and thus their ability to defend themselves.

Have you ever seen Red Dawn?  Check it out if you have not.  The original or the remake both outline the reality of a foreign power attacking America on our land.  Whether or not this is a real possibility is not the argument here though.  The argument is without 2A, a foreign entity would very easily be able to take over an entire town in the United States.

There are those who would argue the government would send the military.  Sure.  The military would be deployed, but the town would already be taken and the residents would be held captive.  Men, women, and children would be in P.O.W. Camps.  Women and children would be subject to any number of atrocities depending on where these foreign invaders hail from.

The point is, I am grateful for the right to own firearms.  And the right to bear my arms when the time calls for it.  Whether against foreign or domestic enemies, I have sworn  to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.  I have not served in the military, but you had better believe if war comes to my doorstep I will pick up my guns and defend our country for myself, my fellow Americans, and for those who cannot defend our great nation for themselves.
